Ce projet consiste a diriger en collaboration avec un professeur de l'Universite Laval un etudiant inscrit a la maitrise au departement d'informatique de la faculte des sciences. L'objet de la recherche concerne d'une part la modelisation des appareils de positionnement au premier debitage et d'autre part l'optimisation de ce positionnement. Ce rapport fait etat de l'avancement des travaux. Le but vise par ce projet est de modeliser les appareils de positionnement au premier debitage et d'etudier de nouvelles methodes de positionnement.
Le positionnement au premier debitage est la premiere action faite dans la scierie qui influencera le rendement au sciag. Pour cette raison, son importance est de premier plan, on peut billes courbes, cela peut atteindre 100% de perte des sciages.

Le troisieme chapitre presente une revue exhaustive de la litterature scientifique traitant de la simulation du debitage. Le cinquieme chapitre fait une description des principales composantes d'un prototype du modele presentement en developpement au Groupe Forintek-Laval.

Abstract
Ce rapport presente une etude de l'exactitude de modeles geometriques utilises avec divers types de scanners. Plus de 100 sections provenant de cinq tiges ont ete digitalisees ("scannees") sous 36 angles equidistants qui couvraient le cercle. Ces images digitalisees ont servi a simuler les lectures prises par les scanners infrarouge (rideau de lumiere) ou camera de 1 axe, 2 axes, 3 axes et 4 axes. Un test que consistait a superposer l'image de la section a l'image du modele geometrique a permis de calculer l'aire de la section qui etait bien representee par le modele, l'aire de la section qui etait perdue et l'aire de la section qui etait ajoutee par le modele. Les 36 positions des diverses sections ont permis de tester la sensibilite des modeles a l'orientation de la section. Le regroupement des valeurs d'aire calculee a permis de determiner la sensibilite des modeles a la position de la section sur la tige et de comparer les modeles selon le type d'utilisation que l'on en fait. Ce rapport presente aussi les bases theoriques (equations) des divers modeles.
Les conclusions sont que pour le classement des billes selon le diametre, un modele pour scanner un axe est suffisant. Cependant, il a ete demontre qu'un modele 1 axe couramment utilise dans l'industrie de l'est du Canada n'est pas satisfaisant pour la mesure des volumes. Le modele ideal pour le cubage est un modele lie aux scanners a deux axes. Enfin, le modeles que nous recommandons pour le positionnement en vue de l'automatisation ou de l'optimisation du premier debitage est un modele lie aux scanners a trois axes. Le peu de difference entre les modeles pour scanner a trois axes et quatre axes ne justifie pas l'emploi de ces derniers. Pour combler un besoin plus grand d'exactitude, nous recommandons l'utilisation d'une autre technologie que les scanners infrarouge ou camera.

Une evolution technologique rapide des equipements employes pour le sechage du bois a eu lieu pendant les dix dernieres annees suite a l'introduction de la micro-informatique dans les systemes de controle des sechoirs. Toutefois, ces systemes sont encore largement bases sur des connaissances empiriques et des parametres mesures dans le sechoir et non pas dans le bois. La prochaine etape dans le developpement des systemes informatises de controle des sechoirs consiste a mettre au point des modeles de simulation de l'envolution de la teneur en humidite, de la temperature et du developpement des contraintes et des deformations dans le bois lors du sechage. Cette information pourra etre utilisee pour prendre des decisions relatives aux conditions de sechage. Les objectifs de ce projet sont donc, premierement de developper un modele integre de transfert de chaleur, transfert de masse, contraintes et deformations dans le bios au cours du sechage et deuxiemement, de former des etudiants gradues au niveau de la maitrise et du doctorat dans le domaine du sechage du bois. La strategie de realisation du projet se resume par les cinq etapes suivantes: 1) Modelisation du transfert de chaleur et de masse dans le bois lors du sechage, 2) Modelisation du developpement des contraintes et des deformations induites lors du sechage, 3) Couplage du modele de transfert de chaleur et de masse au modele de developpement des contraintes et des deformations, 4) Integration du modele dans un systeme de controle de sechoir informatise, 5) Developpement d'un modele d'ecoulement de l'air dans les sechoirs.

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate and measure the amounts of copper, chromium and arsenic residues being leached or dislodged from the surfaces of CCA-C pressure treated lumber in outdoor test structures exposed to natural weathering conditions. Pressure treated lumber purchased locally was used to construct a test structure, consisting of various horizontal, vertical and diagonal components, as well as fence sections. These structures were located at the site of Forintek Canada Corp.'s Ottawa laboratory. Various sections or components of these structures were coated with different types of wood finishes, including paint, varnish, stain and sealer, in order to evaluate their effect on reducing leaching and dislodgeability.

This Executive Report is an initiative of the Chairman of the Canadian Task Force on Pasteurization of Softwood Lumber. It was felt necessary since the Canadian research report is very extensive and was not prepared for the non-scientist. The objective of this report is to state the major conclusions in a way that is easily understood. The recommendations outlined in this report are intended to serve as a basis for discussion and hopefully, as a start of a consensus between all parties involved. This report deals only with the facts and situations encountered during the performance of this project. Other facets of this very complex issue have not been factored in; neither are the results of the European project.
