Abstract
Due to the current interest of the preservation industry in the performance of commodities with an envelope of preservative treatment, most of the work in 1988-89 was directed towards evaluation of existing long term commodity tests. Thus unincised decking, incised lumber, landscape ties, siding, and field cut preservative tests were evaluated. The unincised CCA-treated decking had remained sound after 7 years in test whereas the untreated decking had failed due to decay. With regard to the incised lumber in soil contact, it is too early to compare the performance of needle incised and conventionally incised lumber. However, the similar performance of untreated white spruce and lodgepole pine heartwood is of current interest to pressure treaters concerned about the natural durability of wood species available for treating. There was no visual evidence of decay in the hemlock and Douglas fir mini-ties at the western laboratory or in the red pine and aspen minities at the eastern laboratory after 2 years exposure. There was, however, a higher level of microbial activity in poorly penetrated Douglas fir mini-ties than in better treated hemlock mini-ties with exposed cut ends. End-cut preservative treatment effectively prevented this microbial activity.

Abstract
As a continuation of a project to develop a large scale accelerated laboratory test for the durability evaluation of materials used in the construction of preserved wood foundations, hemfir plywood panels treated to two retention levels with CCA-C and ACA preservatives and installed in PWF test boxes at the Ottawa laboratory are being examined for durability performance after four years in service. This interim progress report has been prepared pending completion of the inspection, at which time a final report will be prepared.

Abstract
La tarière est l'instrument le plus couramment utilisé pour prélever une carotte de bois : pour étudier le taux de croissance, l'âge et l'état de la pourriture chez les arbres vivants; pour dater des cicatrices de feu ou d'autres origines; pour obtenir le matériel nécessaire à l'évaluation de la densité du bois dans le cadre de programmes d'amélioration des arbres; pour déterminer la largeur et la densité des cernes annuels à l'aide de mesures densitométriques par rayons X; pour mesurer la profondeur à laquelle les substances préservatrices ont imprégné le bois de poteaux, poutres, madriers, le bois de construction ou de charpente, en général; pour vérifier l'état des structures comme les bateaux, ponts ou édifices; pour dater des phénomènes géologiques passés (comme les glissements de terrain, la formation de platières alluviales, le changement de niveau des lacs, les taux d'érosion et de sédimentation, etc.). L'utilisation de la tarière est très répandue, à un point tel que la compagnie Forintek analyse, à elle seule, plusieurs milliers d'échantillons chaque année. Malheureusement, les échantillons que nous recevons sont souvent en mauvais état, ce qui a pour effet d'accroître le temps de manutention et d'analyse, et de causer des difficultés dans la détermination précise des caractéristiques du bois. Dans un établissement de recherche sur les produits de la forêt comme le nôtre, les exigences en termes de qualité sont grandes; elles sont évidemment moindres si les échantillons sont prélevés simplement pour déterminer l'âge ou le taux d'accroissement. Encore que des comptages simples s'effectuent beaucoup plus facilement sur le terrain à partir d'échantillons de bonne qualité. En règle générale, l'amélioration de la qualité des échantillons permet d'épargner temps et argent. Du même coup, l'exactitude et la précision des mesures de la largeur et de la densité des cernes s'en trouvera améliorée. Les imperfections les plus couramment observées sur les échantillons sont les suivantes : 1. surfaces rêches et raboteuses dues à l'utilisation de tarières ébréchées; 2. torsion du liège sur le ou les deux premiers centimètres près de l'écorce à cause de l'amorçage vacillant et manuel de la sonde et du changement constant de direction, ce qui cause souvent un bri des carottes sur lesquelles les cernes externes manquent; 3. la décoloration et la décomposition d'échantillons, pourtant de bonne qualité, dans de mauvaises conditions de rangement. En suivant des directives simples, il est possible d'améliorer grandement la qualité des échantillons, dans la mesure où les renseignements donnés aux utilisateurs sont suffisamment étoffés et portent notamment sur le choix d'une tarière appropriée et sa structure interne, sur les principes et procédures de carottage, ainsi que sur l'entretien et l'affûtage de la mèche. L'objectif de ce fascicule est de fournir aux utilisateurs de cet instrument certains "trucs du métier" en matière d'échantillonnage, pour les aider à prélever des carottes de bonne qualité. Son contenu s'adresse autant aux débutants qu'aux utilisateurs expérimentés.

Abstract
A leaching study was done to determine the leachates of didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) and borates produced from F2 treated, hem-fir lumber, subjected to simulated rainfall. Taking into account a 1:10 reduction factor, to relate leachate results from single packages to lumber storage yards, the results suggest that the amounts of DDAC and borates would be below those toxic to rainbow trout after 30-120 minutes following onset of heavy rain.
