Abstract
FERIC studied two identical cut-to-lenght harvesting systems in thinning operations that differed in the stem-selection priorities: in one operation, the goal was to increase the proportion of spruce in the stand, whereas in the other, it was to increase the average stem diameter. Productivities were comparable in both operations; though stem volume significantly affected productivity, the prescription did not.

Abstract
In 1999, FERIC studied a group selection partial cutting operation in an Interior Cedar-Hemlock (ICH) stand, about 90km north of Revelstoke, B.C. A Madill 071 multi-drum cable yarder harvested the site using northbend, gravity skyline (shotgun), and running/scab skyline configurations. The study objective was to evaluate the economics and operational feasibility of using skyline yarding systems for partial cutting in the ICH biogeoclimatic zone. This report describes the results of this case study.

Abstract
In 1998, forest fires in central Alberta caused extensive damage for forest land. The local forest industry and the Alberta Land and Forest Service (ALFS) were anxious to salvage as much burned timber as possible. The ALFS contracted FERIC to organize a workshop on salvaging and processing burned timber, and to conduct and document operational case studies on the recovery and utilization of burned timber. This report summarizes the techniques and strategies that were observed during the case studies to harvest and process burned timber, as well as the results of charcoal and moisture content studies performed on the fire-damaged timber.
