“A pixel is worth 1024 bits”! Captured from the right perspective, every forest manager now sees aerial images as essential in their toolkit! Converting the data bits from a drone or a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) to actionable information bytes for supporting forest operations had been the journey FPInnovations took over the last 6 years. The objective was to assess whether RPASs represented a suitable platform for forestry operations and whether their use provided added value to various applications. Diff erent types of RPASs and miniaturised sensors have been tested in the forestry environment.

Abstract
The growing bioenergy industry is using more and more forest biomass. The logistics of supply and and storage are becoming more complex and innovative and innovative solutions are needed to improve the quality of the raw material. The type of biomass available is quite variable and comes from different sources (stump, roadside, transfer yard, mill) and is from the roadside, from the transshipment area, from the plant) and comes in different formats (wood chips, bark, fine particles, tops, branches tops, branches, low grade logs). The quality of the biomass quality is critical to many bioenergy processes production processes; therefore, sound practices are required to ensure practices are needed to ensure access to quality biomassquality biomass at all times.

L’industrie de la bioénergie, en pleine croissance, utilise de plus en plus de biomasse forestière. La logistique des approvisionnements et de l'entreposage se complexifie et il faut des solutions innovantes pour améliorer la qualité de la matière première. Le type de biomasse disponible est assez variable et provient de différentes sources (de la souche, du bord de route, de l’aire de transbordement, de l’usine) et se présente en différents formats (copeaux de bois, écorces, particules fines, cimes, branches, billes de qualité inférieure). La qualité de la biomasse est essentielle pour bien des procédés de production de bioénergie; c’est pourquoi de saines pratiques sont nécessaires pour garantir un accès à de la biomasse de qualité en tout temps.

Abstract
We know that our forests are a key element in fighting climate change. In addition to sequestering carbon, their biomass can be used as a source of energy or raw material and a substitute for fossil fuel-based products. It is therefore not surprising that several projects involving bioenergy, biomaterials or biofuels are now emerging, placing forest biomass at the centre of the bio-economy. Significant investments are required to establish a forest biomass supply chain. Any medium or large project needs a feasibility study to address fundamental issues such as long-term supply guarantees, competitive costs and financing considerations. FPInnovations has developed the tools and expertise to conduct this type of study and ensure that projects are viable in the long term.

In recent years, when high-resolution and low-altitude imaging of forests is needed for surveillance, inventorying or continuous monitoring, the tool of choice is an unmanned aerial system (UAS), commonly known as a drone. Especially useful are vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) systems, which can take off and land vertically, and which can provide detailed information in confined or hard-to-reach areas. However, when it comes to forest operational needs, one question is frequently asked: Do the added advantages of high-end systems justify their cost ($60,000), or do low-end systems ($6,000 plus a tablet) provide similar or acceptable output?

Ces dernières années, lorsqu'une imagerie haute résolution et à basse altitude des forêts est nécessaire pour la surveillance, l'inventaire ou le suivi continu, l'outil de choix est un système aérien sans pilote (UAS), communément appelé drone. Les systèmes à décollage et atterrissage verticaux (VTOL), qui peuvent décoller et atterrir verticalement et fournir des informations détaillées dans des zones confinées ou difficiles d'accès, sont particulièrement utiles. Abstract
Buckthorn is an invasive exotic species that is widespread in southern Quebec. It represents a real biodiversity issue and compromises, among other things, the growth of plantations. In order to find solutions to control it, a study was conducted to measure the effects of mechanical soil preparation compared to the repeated application of a chemical herbicide. Access roads to forest resources are particularly vulnerable to the immediate and short-term effects of these changes. Given the importance of these roads to various users, adaptation strategies must be developed and implemented to maintain access to the forest environment and to make these roads resilient. It is in this context that FPInnovations researchers studied the vulnerability of access roads and recommended methods and practices for adaptation.

Le nerprun bourdaine est une espèce exotique envahissante très répandue dans le sud du Québec. Il représente un réel enjeu de biodiversité et compromet, entre autres, la croissance des plantations. Dans le but de trouver des solutions pour le maîtriser, une étude a été menée pour mesurer les effets de la préparation mécanique du sol comparés à l’application répétée d’un phytocide chimique.Les routes d’accès aux ressources forestières sont particulièrement vulnérables aux effets immédiats et à court terme de ces changements. Devant l’importance de ces routes pour divers utilisateurs, des stratégies d’adaptation doivent être développées et mises en œuvre pour maintenir l’accès au milieu forestier et pour rendre ces routes résilientes. C’est dans ce contexte que des chercheurs de FPInnovations ont étudié la vulnérabilité des routes d’accès et recommandé des méthodes et des pratiques pour s’adapter.
