Abstract
Since the cost of fuel is an important factor in the use of off-road equipment, it is to the advantage of every machine owner to make the most of this necessary expense. Certain work habits and operational factors influence fuel consumption. Recent trials conducted by FPInnovations researchers have explored some ways to improve fuel intensity and measure the savings.

Puisque le coût du carburant est un facteur important dans l’utilisation des équipements hors route, il est à l’avantage de tout propriétaire de machine de tirer le maximum de cette dépense nécessaire. Certaines habitudes de travail et facteurs opérationnels ont une influence sur la consommation de carburant. De récents essais menés par les chercheurs de FPInnovations ont permis d’explorer certaines pistes d’amélioration de l’intensité énergétique et de mesurer les économies.

Abstract
This report chronicles the joint development of an air conditioner for forest machinery by FERIC and I & M electric rebuilders of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The air conditioner is hydraulically powered and used a compressed refrigerant gas for heat transfer. Three prototypes were designed, built, and tested in forest operations in Ontario and Quebec.

Abstract
The Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC) studied a heavy-lift helicopter logging operation near Mission in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia. An S-64E Aircrane was used to harvest retention and clearcut units on steep slopes. This report presents productivity and cost information for the helicopter logging operation, and discusses factors affecting the efficiency of the operation.

Abstract
The free-flying aerial logging vehicle is an attractive alternative to conventional cable logging systems on steep slopes, because it requires fewer roads and landings, permits shorter operational lead times and reduces environmental impacts. Helicopter are being used to log high value timber, but high operating costs and limited payloads often offset the advantages. Heavy-lift airships, combining both static (helium) lift and aerodynamic lift, may offer a lower-cost alternative. Much of the world's remaining high quality timber is on areas too inaccessible for too environmentally sensitive for economical logging by current methods. The cyclocrane and other heavy-lift airship developments show promise for overcoming these obstacles.

L’intégration des phases de débardage et d’ébranchage dans la récolte par arbres entiers offre l’opportunité d’utiliser les débardeurs à grappin pour retourner les résidus d’ébranchage sur le parterre de coupe au fur et à mesure qu’ils sont produits. Dans les opérations observées, la manipulation des résidus a eu peu ou pas d’effet sur la productivité des débardeurs et des ébrancheuses.
