THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE RESULTS OF A JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN FERIC AND THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY (DIVISION OF LAND AND FOREST RESOURCES) AND WAS PART OF THE ENFOR PROGRAM OF THE CANADIAN FORESTRY SERVICE. IT DESCRIBES THE PERFORMANCE OF A PROTOTYPE ROLL SPLITTER TO DEWATER THE STEMS OF THREE TREE SPECIES AND THE ENHANCEMENT BY AIR DRYING OF THE DEWATERING OF THE CRUSHED ITEMS. MECHANICAL COMMINUTION ENERGY DATA ARE PRESENTED.

Les relations mathématiques et graphiques entre les conditions d'utilisation d'un véhicule et les pertes énergétiques ont été développées dans le cadre de la définition continue d'une base de données informatisée grâce à laquelle il est possible de mesurer et d'optimiser les systèmes de transport. Pour démontrer l'application pratique de ces travaux de recherche, nous avons calculé les économies possibles dans une opération réelle de transport.
Analysis of productivity and cost of forestry transportation : Part three: theoretical analysis of the impact of vehicle operating conditions on power losses [and] experimental determination of rolling and air resistance forces
The mathematical and graphical relationships between vehicle operating conditions on power losses have been developed in the continued definition of a computerized data base by which the efficiency of transportation systems can be measured and optimized. To demonstrate the practical application of this research work, the savings possible in a realistic haul operation have been calculated.
Field tests were conducted to determine the cost and productivity of a preproduction prototype model of a container system used to recover roadside biomass in mountainous terrain. The system recovered 82 m**3 of biomass per eight-hour shift. Load size averages 20.5 m**3 with a cycle time of 2 hours from the tests it is conservatively estimated that the recovery cost will be $8.32/m**3. With a production model of the container system fully integrated into the logging process it may be possible to achieve costs of $4.55/m**3. The cost of the conventional system (logging truck and choker skidder) used to recover roadside biomass is 15.51/m**3.
Under the Canadian Governments Energy from the forest (ENFOR) program, two prototype machines for recovering forest residues from logging sites were built. The Recufor was designed to recover the logging residue left on the forest floor, comminute this material into size suitable for handling, and transport it to roadside. Some of the design principles of the Recufor were adapted for the logging residue processor (LRP) which was developed as a self-propelled machine to recover and reduce the residues left at roadside after full tree delimbing operations. The design, development and field trials of these prototype machines are covered in this report.
This development was initiated by the Pacific Forest Research Centre's work on the problem of pine beetle infestation and their finding that the spread of the beetle could be controlled by the removal of the bark from infested trees in isolated outbreaks of attack in operation, the machine is placed on the tree, climbs it and removes the branches. At a predetermined height, the machine reverses direction and activates the debarker which removes the bark on the trip down. Other possible used of this machine are discussed.
