Abstract
Forest companies across Canada are interested in using laser scanners for scaling logs because it has potential for reducing scaling costs. Scanning logs over bark requires a method to obtain the under-bark diameter in order to calculate the solid wood volume. This report evaluates the methods of applying a bark factor to determine under-bark diameter. It also identifies new scanner scaling technologies for measuring bark thickness.

Abstract
FPInnovations conducted a ground-based ash and biosolids spreading trial in Quebec. One treatment used a horizontal spinner as a spreading method and the other treatment used a line-dumping method. The trial showed that deflector plates helped to increase spreading uniformity. The trial results were also used to create a costing model that calculates productivity and the costs of spreading ash or biosolids using the two application methods.

Abstract
This study addressed biomass availability, harvesting, transportation, and chipping costs for the production of bioenergy in the Teslin region of Yukon. It revealed that significant volumes of standing timber below 20 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) exist that could be utilized for bioenergy. These volumes, however, would sustain only small electricity generation capacities; however, a more efficient solution would be to utilize the biomass in district heating applications. The study also estimated harvesting, transportation, and chipping costs of low- and high-mechanized systems. These costs will have to be further validated and incorporated into an investment calculator to assess the feasibility of future bioenergy projects in Teslin.

Abstract
Woody biomass heating projects are becoming more and more numerous in Quebec and the trend is not decreasing. In this context, the skills to guarantee the quality of the biomass will become more and more important in order to limit costs and maximize the efficiency of the systems. There is a frequent mismatch between the biomass delivered and the desired characteristics for the various bioenergy processes. Forestry companies supplying woody biomass as well as bioenergy producers need to be more aware of biomass quality criteria. To assist these companies, FPInnovations researchers have been working on this issue.

Les projets de chauffage à la biomasse ligneuse sont de plus en plus nombreux au Québec et la tendance n’est pas à la baisse. Dans ce contexte, les compétences permettant de garantir la qualité de la biomasse deviendront de plus en plus importantes afin de limiter les coûts et de maximiser l’efficacité des systèmes. Une disparité fréquente entre la biomasse livrée et les caractéristiques souhaitée pour les divers procédés de bioénergie est observée. Les entreprises forestières qui fournissent de la biomasse ligneuse ainsi que les producteurs de bioénergie se doivent de mieux connaître les critères de qualité de la biomasse. Pour venir en aide à ces entreprises, des chercheurs de FPInnovations se sont penchés sur la question.

Abstract
The demand for forest biomass for bioenergy production is increasing worldwide. Industrial residues (bark, sawdust and black liquor) and, to a lesser extent, logging residues (tree branches and tops) are currently the main sources of supply. However, forest disturbances such as fires and insect outbreaks could make large quantities of biomass available. Several Canadian Forest Service (CFS) researchers are working on projects related to the recovery of wood from disturbances for bioenergy purposes.

La demande de biomasse forestière pour la production de bioénergie est en augmentation à l’échelle mondiale. Les résidus de l’industrie (écorces, sciures et liqueur noire) et, dans une moindre mesure, les résidus de coupe forestière (branches et cimes des arbres) en sont présentement les principales sources d’approvisionnement. Les perturbations forestières comme les feux et les épidémies d’insectes pourraient toutefois rendre disponibles de grandes quantités de biomasse. Plusieurs chercheurs du Service canadien des forêts (SCF) travaillent sur des projets en lien avec la récupération des bois de perturbations à des fins bioénergétiques.

Abstract
Attracting, retaining and training labor is a challenge for forest operations in North America. FPInnovations attended the Pacific Logging Congress (PLC) in November 2015 where one of the technical sessions focused on attracting and retaining people to the industry, in particular to contractor operations. The majority of the strategies presented in this Info-Note were suggested by logging contractors presenting at the PLC. A few others gleaned from other sources were added as well.

FPInnovations a assisté au Pacific Logging Congress (PLC) en novembre 2015, dont l’une des sessions portait sur les meilleures pratiques pour attirer et retenir les employés dans l’industrie, en particulier pour les entrepreneurs. La majorité des stratégies présentées ici ont été adoptées par les entrepreneurs forestiers qui faisaient une présentation au PLC. Nous en avons ajouté quelques autres obtenues d’ailleurs.
