Abstract
FERIC compared three harvesting systems (full-tree, tree-length, and cut-to length) on a clay site in northwestern Québec. None of the systems limited rutting to below the acceptable target level; however, cut-to-length harvesting (using a three-machine system) showed slightly better results than the other two systems.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
FERIC undertook a study in central Alberta to compare debarking and chipping of small-diameter logs at a woodroom chipping operation and at a portable in-woods chipping operation. FERIC evaluated whether chip recovery and quality, and chipping productivity, are affected by changes in stem size, log condition (unfrozen versus frozen), and debarking and chipping method. Net operational costs were also examined.

Abstract
This summary report presents the main findings of a study of systems for the production of aspen veneer logs in northern Ontario. The case studies, which took place in 2001 and 2002, covered four types of operations: in-woods chipping, satellite yards, roundwood merchandizing at roadside, and roundwood production at the stump. The advantages and disadvantages of each system for the production of veneer logs are given, along with production cost estimates for each system. A report presenting further productivity and quality data, and a detailed cost analysis (in an Excel spreadsheet) are available to FERIC members and partners on request.

Abstract
This report discusses options for composting the fines component of residues produced at log sortyards, including composting the fines with a readily available and inexpensive nitrogen source like fish processing waste. Based on the B.C. Agricultural composting Handbook, FERIC calculated the sizing and capacity of a potential logyard fines composting facility. Costs associated with operating a composting site under various equipment ownership and utilization scenarios are presented.
