Abstract
The 1-2-3 selection cutting method was originally designed as a low-cost and practical silvicultural alternative for efficiently managing softwood harvests. Through the FPInnovations Hardwood Initiative, two operational trials were conducted in predominantly sugar maple stands to measure the efficiency of the 1-2-3 method when applied to hardwood forests. In both trials, feller-bunchers operators were able to rapidly apply the method's specific trail designand tree selection rules after a brief training period. By comparing pre- and post-treatment stand characteristics and composition, as well as tree vigour, crown release, and growing conditions, the method showed it was able to improve overall stand quality. The method's harvest system also resulted in high machine productivity at a competitive cost. While only extensive implementation could truly reveal the method's full protential, both trials suggest that the 1-2-3 selection cutting method is well suited to hardwood forest harvests.

La coupe de jardinage 1-2-3 a d’abord été conçue comme solution sylvicole pratique et peu coûteuse pour une gestion efficace de peuplements résineux. Dans le cadre de l’Initiative sur les feuillus de FPInnovations, deux essais opérationnels ont été réalisés dans des peuplements à prédominance d’érable à sucre pour mesurer l’efficacité de la méthode 1-2-3 en forêt feuillue. Dans les deux essais, les opérateurs d’abatteuse groupeuse ont té en mesure d’appliquer rapidement, après une brève période de formation, les règles de la méthode pour ce qui est de la disposition des sentiers et de la sélection des tiges. Si l’on compare les caractéristiques et la composition des peuplements avant et après traitement, ainsi que la vigueur des tiges, le égagement des cimes et les conditions de croissance, on constate que la méthode peut améliorer la qualité globale du peuplement. Ce système de récolte a également donné lieu à une productivité machine élevée à un coût concurrentiel. Bien que seule une mise en application à grande échelle puisse réellement en révéler le plein potentiel, les résultats des deux essais permettent de croire que la méthode de jardinage 1-2-3 convient bien à la récolte de forêts feuillues.

Abstract
When wildfire escapes into the wildlands-urban interface, homes, industrial facilities, and other urban values can be threatened or destroyed. As recommended by the FireSmart Canada program, vegetation management is a key principle in mitigating the risk of wildfire affecting urban values. In 2007, at a forested test site in the Northwest Territories, Canada, FPInnovations evaluated the effectiveness of using vegetation management- i.e., removal and reduction of forest fuels from the vicinity of a small building- as a strategy for protecting the building from wildfire.
