Forest-origin biomass estimates were made by FPInnovations for a location in Northern Alberta, largely following the process previously established for six BC Timber Supply Areas using FPInterface (2010 13). The biomass inventory was based on 20-year harvest and road network plans for Crown land provided by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry as well as local forest tenure holders. Abstract
Current forest management policy in many jurisdictions in North America manages excess woody debris by piling and burning it, mainly as a post-harvest fire hazard abatement obligation. This study highlights three key points to consider regarding utilization and disposal of waste wood piles: 1) Allocate most woody debris waste to the biofuels sector in a cost-effective manner; 2) Allocate a small portion of woody debris (e.g. 10-15%) to implement windrow habitats where necessary to maintain mammalian biodiversity on clearcuts; 3) Limit burning of waste wood to those sites near human activity (potential fire hazard) that do not have an opportunity for biofuels or windrow purposes.

Abstract
Spontaneous combustion of hog piles can result in inventory losses and potential damage to surrounding infrastructure and equipment. In April and June 2016, FPInnovations and Terminal Forest Product Ltd. conducted a study to investigate the use of thermal infra-red digital cameras to examine the thermal dynamics of a coastal hog fuel pile. They also investigated the feasibility of using thermal imaging to help develop better fire risk mitigation solutions.

Abstract
Utilizing forest harvest residue is an issue of growing urgency in the British Columbia forest industry, In B.C., forest residues at roadside have traditionally been burned to mitigate fire hazard or, occasionally, they have been left to rot. With an increasing demand for energy and concern over climate change and air quality, burning may no longer be the most desirable practice for dealing with residues. Further, there is an increasing demand for harvest residues by both primary and secondary users to fuel the growing bioeconomy in B.C.

Abstract
The Bulkley TSA biomass inventory was based on 50-year harvest and road network plans for Crown land provided by the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO). The biomass yield per hectare predicted for the Bulkley TSA is 25.2 oven-dried tonnes per hectare (odt/ha) from harvest residues. Over the next 50 years a total of 3.48 million odt of available biomass are predicted to be generated by harvest in the Bulkley TSA, or approximately 70,000 odt/yr. Of this, approximately 231,000 odt in total, or 4,600 odt/yr, is expected to be available at the economic price of $60 per oven-dried tonne.

It is well known that the forest biomass used to supply the energy sector must meet the quality standards of energy production facilities. These standards relate to moisture content (TH), particle size, fine particle content and degree of contamination. Customers have their own requirements, which sometimes differ from each other, and the supplier must meet them. The development of a payment system based on quality criteria and energy value seems obvious, but not everything is the obvious, but it is not that simple.
Abstract
Devant l’enjeu des changements climatiques, tous les secteurs d’activités sont appelés à faire leur part afin de diminuer les émissions de CO2. Il en est de même avec les activités en forêt. Les différents groupes de recherche en opérations forestières chez FPInnovations se sont penchés sur la question et proposent diverses options d’atténuation. Parmi celles-ci, on compte l’adoption de méthodes plus écoénergétiques de conduite de machinerie, l’utilisation de biocarburants et la réduction des résidus de coupe laissés en forêt. Mais comme on ne contrôle bien que ce qu’on mesure, ils ont tout d’abord mis au point des outils permettant de calculer les émissions de carbone issues des opérations forestières.
