Abstract
It is well known: our forests are an essential key to the fight against climate change. In addition to sequestering carbon, the use of its biomass as a source of energy or as a raw material allows for the substitution of fossil fuel-based products. It is therefore not surprising that several bioenergy, biomaterials or biofuels projects are emerging, thus placing forest biomass in the bioeconomy.
Abstract
C’est connu : nos forêts sont une clé essentielle à la lutte aux changements climatiques. En plus de séquestrer du carbone, l’utilisation de sa biomasse comme source d’énergie ou comme matière première permet de substituer des produits à base de combustibles fossiles. Il n’est donc pas surprenant que plusieurs projets de bioénergie, de biomatériaux ou de biocarburants émergent, plaçant ainsi la biomasse forestière dans le giron de la bioéconomie.

Abstract
The City of Quesnel has applied an innovative selective harvesting technique in a mature Douglas-fir forest stand with the objectives of maintaining biodiversity and reducing fuel-load buildup and consequent wildfire threat. FPInnovations researchers monitored and documented the harvesting operations and measured machine productivity to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the operation.
To support the assessment of fuel-load reduction, FPInnovations' Wildfire Operations group conducted fuel-sampling activities to produce a pre-harvest forest fuel inventory. The inventory data were converted to formats to be applied in two fuel-management tools: a photo guide of the pre-treatment fuel environment and a dataset that can be input to FuelCalBC
