FERIC a développé un modèle pour estimer le potentiel des remorques polyvalentes à réduire les coûts de transport et l’impact environnemental des opérations de camionnage en réduisant le nombre de remorques sur la route, en utilisant plus efficacement les remorques restantes et en diminuant les distances totales de déplacement. Le modèle a démontré que des économies significatives sont possibles dans toutes les régions du Canada, et qu’elles peuvent même être considérables dans certaines régions.

Pour établir des taux de transport équitables et raisonnables avec des entrepreneurs, il est important d'estimer tous les coûts avec précision. Les entrepreneurs aussi doivent connaître leurs coûts afin de pouvoir identifier les points à améliorer. FERIC s'est penché sur cette question en effectuant une étude sur les réparations et l'entretien d'ensembles camion-remorque dans les Maritimes, en vue d'obtenir une information plus fiable sur les coûts. Le projet consistait à suivre, sur une période de deux ans, les coûts de réparation et d'entretien de 20 camions autochargeurs (trains doubles de type B et ensembles semi-remorque) et d'un train double de type B sans chargeuse, qui circulaient sur des routes publiques et des routes forestières en Nouvelle-Écosse et au Nouveau-Brunswick. Les résultats ont fourni des coûts moyens pour toutes les activités de réparation et d'entretien, répartis dans les catégories suivantes: système électrique, carrosserie et structure, entretien, pneus et jantes, freins et système pneumatique, suspension, moteur et train d'entraînement, ainsi que système hydraulique.

Abstract
Les membres de FERIC lui ont demandé de déterminer le point d’équilibre économique entre les coûts d’entretien des routes et les coûts de transport. Le présent rapport traite de l’effet du niveau d’entretien routier sur la vitesse de déplacement ou le temps requis par cycle, dans l’opération forestière étudiée. En général, la vitesse de déplacement demeurait relativement constante jusqu’à ce qu’un seuil supérieur de rugosité de la route soit dépassé; ainsi tout nivelage additionnel ne fournit que peu de bénéfices en termes de vitesse. De futurs rapports examineront l’impact économique potentiel du pavage des routes forestières et l’effet de la rugosité de la route sur la consommation de carburant.

Abstract
When hauling wood chips in winter, frozen loads can create costs that are rarely included in the haul rates; these include downtime, lost payload capacity, and hours of manual labor to remove the chips. Contractors have tried many methods to solve the problem, and most have arrived at acceptable solutions. FERIC has spent the past two winters working with contractors in northwestern Ontario to identify their "best practices" and test additional solutions. This report summarizes these best practices and new preventative practices identified during FERIC's study.

Abstract
FERIC's Opti-Grade grading-management system can reduce grading costs by continuously measuring the condition of the road so as to identify sections that require the most maintenance and by concentrating maintenance efforts on those sections. Eighteen systems are already in service across Canada and the users report savings in grading costs on the order of 25%. Opti-Grade also lets managers determine the impact of the road's condition on travel speeds and justify the rehabilitation of problem sections.

FERIC developed a model for estimating the potential of multi-use trailers to reduce haul costs and the environmental impact of haul operations by reducing the number of trailers on the road, using the remaining trailers more efficiently, and reducing total travel distances. The model demonstrated that significant savings are possible in all regions of Canada, with dramatic savings possible in some regions

Abstract
When setting fair and reasonable haul rates with contractors, it is important to accurately estimates all costs. Contractors must also know their costs so they can identify areas of improvement. FERIC addressed this issue through a tractor-trailer repair and maintenance study in the Maritimes designed to provide more reliable costing information. The project tracked the repair and maintenance costs of 20 self-loading rigs (B-trains and semi-trailers) and one B-train without a loader that traveled on highways and logging roads in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick over a 2-year period. The results provided average costs for all repairs and maintenance, divided into the following categories: electrical, body and structural, maintenance, tires and rims, brakes and air system, suspension, engine and drive train, and hydraulics
