Abstract
Newer lubrication systems for harvester saw chains provide a continuous flow of oil to match the chain's needs, and potentially reduce costs. FERIC measured oil consumption with conventional and continuous oilers, and found payback periods as low as 1.5 years with a continuous oiler installed at the time of purchase and 2.5 years with a retrofitted harvester.

Les plus récents systèmes de lubrification pour les scies à chaîne d'abatteuse-façonneuse fournissent un débit continu d'huile en fonction des besoins de la chaîne, offrant ainsi la possibilité de réduire les coûts. FERIC a mesuré la consommation d'huile avec des huileurs conventionnels et continus, et a constaté que la période de récupération de l'investissement pouvait être aussi courte que 1,5 an pour un huileur continu installé au moment de l'achat et 2,5 ans lorsque monté après coup sur l'abatteuse-façonneuse.

Abstract
FPInnovations completed a trial in December 2016 which examined the productivity and cost of three methods of piling and grinding logging residues (Spencer and Blackburn, 2017). The December trial compared three pile types: 1. Piles built by a log loader for burning after the initial harvest. 2. Piles built by a log loader for biomass extraction after the initial harvest. 3. Piles built by the processor during the processing phase of harvesting. One concern that arose from this trial was whether having a processor neatly pile residues created a loss in productivity versus the traditional method of throwing or “flinging” the residual tops as far as possible from the processor. Researchers returned to Vanderhoof in March 2017 to monitor the productivity of the two methods (throwing and stacking) for handling residues.
