Abstract
This technical note summarizes FERIC's development program of a base wheeled carrier for a proposed modular machine system designed specifically for off-road forestry applications. The report describes the evolution of the machine prototype in the forwarder mode through the design, fabrication, field test and modification stages up until its transfer to the eventual manufacturer for final development and commercialization.

Abstract
A methodology for comparing the predicted production and cost performance of wood harvesting machine and system options is presented. Data from machine evaluation and performance studies have been analysed and used to draw performance versus average tree size curves for "ideal" vaseline working conditions. Further analysis of these data was used to develop correction factors which are used to permit the prediction of actual performance when operating in stands having verying degrees of difficulty.

This report is intended to stimulate creativity and encourage a more open dialogue between machine user-owners and manufacturers to develop improved wood harvesting systems. Le rapport presente une methodologie servant a comparer la productivite prevue et les couts de diverses machines et de divers systemes d'exploitation forestiere. Des données tirés d'études d'évaluation et de la performance des machines furent analysées et utilisées pour tracer des courbes de productivité en fonction du volume moyen des arbres, Ces courbes de référence représentent les conditions idéales de travail. Une analyse plus poussée de ces données a permis l'établissement de facteurs de correction nécessaires à la prévision de la performance corrigée des machines quand elles travaillent dans des peuplements présentant divers degrés de difficulté.

Abstract
In an effort to improve the flotation and mobility of off-road vehicles on the low strength soils which underlie large portions of the forest area throughout Canada, FERIC initiated a search for a dependable high-flotation tire which could be used to improve the performance of existing logging machines. This report describes the four-year testing and development program, and the performance of skidders equipped with wide, high flotation tires on both soft and on steep terrain. The advantages and disadvantages of these tires are summarized.
