Abstract
Although GPS surveys combined with GIS software can produce accurate measurements of treated areas, the accuracy of these estimates decreases in rough terrain as a result of the topographical changes, FERIC studied a tool that can resolve this problem by calculating a corrected area that more accurately reflects the treated surface.

This report analyzes the costs associated with three direct-seeding systems used in Canada for the regeneration of boreal conifers and compares these costs with those of a container planting system. The study identifies component costs for each system to aid readers in choosing the most cost-effective system, and recommends future research and development directions to provide more economical direct-seeding systems.

Abstract
Test results are presented comparing average cross-track errors obtained in kinematic mode for three GPS receivers of different price ranges using three differential-correction methods under three kinds of forest canopies. Data was collected in all weather over a three-month period and was separated by leaf-on and leaf-off conditions. All receiver/correction configurations provided average cross-track errors suitable for most forestry applications. GPS data collection practices are probably more important than the choice of receiver or correction type.

Le SXBlue Mapper a été évalué en modes statique et cinématique durant la saison avec feuilles et sans feuilles. Le récepteur GPS utilise une technologie permettant un meilleur usage sous couvert forestier du service de correction WAAS et une communication sans fil entre le récepteur et un ordinateur de poche. Les résultats en mode cinématique, de même que les résultats en mode horizontaux durant les essais statiques à découvert, étaient très bons. Toutes les mesures verticales, ainsi que la précision horizontale en mode statique sous couvert forestier, étaient décevantes.

Abstract
This report presents the results of a study to examine the potential use of onboard GPS-based tracking systems to map harvest blocks. The results indicated that current GPS tracking systems can be used to monitor the progress of feller-bunchers, but because they do not track boom movements, they may not provide sufficiently accurate area calculations and boundary locations to meet regulatory needs.
