Abstract
Harvest operations on soft soils can be particularly challenging in order to respect site and soil disturbance guidelines as well as operational requirements. To address the challenges of operating on soft soils, FPInnovations has worked on solutions designed to reduce disturbance on weak soils while minimizing implementation and investment costs by using machines already being used in the operation.

Abstract
Attracting, retaining and training labor is a challenge for forest operations in North America. FPInnovations attended the Pacific Logging Congress (PLC) in November 2015 where one of the technical sessions focused on attracting and retaining people to the industry, in particular to contractor operations. The majority of the strategies presented in this Info-Note were suggested by logging contractors presenting at the PLC. A few others gleaned from other sources were added as well.

FPInnovations a assisté au Pacific Logging Congress (PLC) en novembre 2015, dont l’une des sessions portait sur les meilleures pratiques pour attirer et retenir les employés dans l’industrie, en particulier pour les entrepreneurs. La majorité des stratégies présentées ici ont été adoptées par les entrepreneurs forestiers qui faisaient une présentation au PLC. Nous en avons ajouté quelques autres obtenues d’ailleurs.

Traction-assist (also called winch-assist, or tethered-assist) technology for steep-slope harvesting and forest operations has increasingly been implemented worldwide over the past four to five years. Industry involvement and the need for relevant information in western Canada have dramatically expanded in the last year alone. FPInnovations attended the Western Region Council on Forest Engineering (WR.COFE) seminar in January 2016, where one of the technical sessions focused on steep-slope tethered-assist technology. More than 300 attendees received updates from an academic (Oregon State University), a manufacturer (Summit Attachment & Machinery), a contractor (Technical Forest Solutions), a regulator (Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and a cable logging specialist(Brian Tuor)

Abstract
Le niveau de danger associé au transport forestier est extrêmement élevé. En 2014-2015, FPInnovations a répertorié plusieurs technologies commercialisées qui pourraient être adaptées aux opérations forestières. Leurs utilisations permettraient d’améliorer la sécurité et réduire les dangers auxquels sont exposés les conducteurs de camion ainsi que les autres utilisateurs sur les routes canadiennes et les routes d’accès aux ressources (Hickman, 2015). L’une des technologies mentionnées dans ce rapport est le contrôle électronique de la stabilité (CES), qui exige une attention immédiate, car elle sera obligatoire en 2017 pour tous les camions lourds aux États-Unis (National Transportation Safety Board, 2015). Transports Canada (2015) devrait rendre le CES obligatoire pour s’harmoniser avec les règles américaines. L’objectif de la présente note est donc d’explorer les implications de cette obligation sur les opérations forestières canadiennes. FPI a documenté le point de vue de différents intervenants ainsi que la technologie et les lacunes dans les connaissances qui doivent être comblées pour mettre en application ce système dans les opérations forestières.
