Abstract
Linear programming is a technique used to determine the best (or optimal) solution to a problem where there are a number of competing and usually interrelated choices. The technique requires that each restriction on the problem being modeled be formulated as a linear equation. The model consists of a set of linear equations with more unknowns than equations and thus there are many possible solutions. In order to determine the best of these solutions, it is necessary to decide which criteria will be used to determine the best. Once the criteria (usually maximum profit or minimum cost) is chosen, an equation is set up giving the amount each variable (or activity) contributes to the criteria. The linear program then determines which solution will maximize or minimize this criteria. The LP described in this write up was written to determine the best process and set of process conditions for converting steam exploded Aspen wood into a variety of chemical feedstocks. The LP is designed to maximize profit based on the sales value of the chemicals produced, the cost of raw materials and the processing costs incurred. The model is restricted by the raw material availability, the utility and chemical requirements of each process step, the capacity of each process step and the market requirements for each chemical produced. This report will give a detailed description of the model structure, will discuss the validity of the data used in the model as well as future requirements, will discuss the running of the model on the computer and will discuss analysis of the LP solution.

Abstract
Woody biomass heating projects are becoming more and more numerous in Quebec and the trend is not decreasing. In this context, the skills to guarantee the quality of the biomass will become more and more important in order to limit costs and maximize the efficiency of the systems. There is a frequent mismatch between the biomass delivered and the desired characteristics for the various bioenergy processes. Forestry companies supplying woody biomass as well as bioenergy producers need to be more aware of biomass quality criteria. To assist these companies, FPInnovations researchers have been working on this issue.

Les projets de chauffage à la biomasse ligneuse sont de plus en plus nombreux au Québec et la tendance n’est pas à la baisse. Dans ce contexte, les compétences permettant de garantir la qualité de la biomasse deviendront de plus en plus importantes afin de limiter les coûts et de maximiser l’efficacité des systèmes. Une disparité fréquente entre la biomasse livrée et les caractéristiques souhaitée pour les divers procédés de bioénergie est observée. Les entreprises forestières qui fournissent de la biomasse ligneuse ainsi que les producteurs de bioénergie se doivent de mieux connaître les critères de qualité de la biomasse. Pour venir en aide à ces entreprises, des chercheurs de FPInnovations se sont penchés sur la question.

Abstract
The demand for forest biomass for bioenergy production is increasing worldwide. Industrial residues (bark, sawdust and black liquor) and, to a lesser extent, logging residues (tree branches and tops) are currently the main sources of supply. However, forest disturbances such as fires and insect outbreaks could make large quantities of biomass available. Several Canadian Forest Service (CFS) researchers are working on projects related to the recovery of wood from disturbances for bioenergy purposes.

La demande de biomasse forestière pour la production de bioénergie est en augmentation à l’échelle mondiale. Les résidus de l’industrie (écorces, sciures et liqueur noire) et, dans une moindre mesure, les résidus de coupe forestière (branches et cimes des arbres) en sont présentement les principales sources d’approvisionnement. Les perturbations forestières comme les feux et les épidémies d’insectes pourraient toutefois rendre disponibles de grandes quantités de biomasse. Plusieurs chercheurs du Service canadien des forêts (SCF) travaillent sur des projets en lien avec la récupération des bois de perturbations à des fins bioénergétiques.
