“A pixel is worth 1024 bits”! Captured from the right perspective, every forest manager now sees aerial images as essential in their toolkit! Converting the data bits from a drone or a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) to actionable information bytes for supporting forest operations had been the journey FPInnovations took over the last 6 years. The objective was to assess whether RPASs represented a suitable platform for forestry operations and whether their use provided added value to various applications. Diff erent types of RPASs and miniaturised sensors have been tested in the forestry environment.

In recent years, when high-resolution and low-altitude imaging of forests is needed for surveillance, inventorying or continuous monitoring, the tool of choice is an unmanned aerial system (UAS), commonly known as a drone. Especially useful are vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) systems, which can take off and land vertically, and which can provide detailed information in confined or hard-to-reach areas. However, when it comes to forest operational needs, one question is frequently asked: Do the added advantages of high-end systems justify their cost ($60,000), or do low-end systems ($6,000 plus a tablet) provide similar or acceptable output?

Ces dernières années, lorsqu'une imagerie haute résolution et à basse altitude des forêts est nécessaire pour la surveillance, l'inventaire ou le suivi continu, l'outil de choix est un système aérien sans pilote (UAS), communément appelé drone. Abstract
Native forest insects are an essential part of the forest ecosystem. However, increased density beyond a threshold, or their invasive nature – as seen with Spruce budworm (SBW) in eastern Quebec in recent years – can cause long-lasting damage to a healthy ecosystem. Developing tools and means for identifying risk early on, to effectively deploy control measures, has been one of the critical objectives of collaborative research through the “SBW Early Intervention Strategy” network, with researchers from NRCanCFS, the Healthy Forest Partnership, provincial governments, universities, industry, and FPInnovations. This information is especially needed for the comprehensive forest management program used for timely intervention in New Brunswick.
