Since 2013, several research projects on the use of drones in forestry operations have taken place at FPInnovations. Different types of drones and sensors have been tested. Abstract
Depuis 2013, plusieurs projets de recherche sur l’utilisation des drones dans les opérations forestières se sont déroulés chez FPInnovations. Différents types de drones et de capteurs ont été mis à l’essai. L’objectif commun de ces tests était d’évaluer si les drones représentaient une plateforme adaptée aux opérations forestières et si leur utilisation apportait une valeur ajoutée. Cette publication présente un survol des tests réalisés ainsi que les constats établis.

Abstract
Native forest insects are an essential part of the forest ecosystem. However, increased density beyond a threshold, or their invasive nature – as seen with Spruce budworm (SBW) in eastern Quebec in recent years – can cause long-lasting damage to a healthy ecosystem. Developing tools and means for identifying risk early on, to effectively deploy control measures, has been one of the critical objectives of collaborative research through the “SBW Early Intervention Strategy” network, with researchers from NRCanCFS, the Healthy Forest Partnership, provincial governments, universities, industry, and FPInnovations. This information is especially needed for the comprehensive forest management program used for timely intervention in New Brunswick.

Up until this study, we have completed 11 fires in grass fuels, one deliberate research burn and 3 case studies of petential survival zones in wildfires. To date, all have been on level terrain. This spring, Jasper National Park provided us an opportunity to cellect data on steep slope at their Vine Creek PB.
