Abstract
Air-conditioning systems on Canadian logging operations have traditionally suffered form low reliability, as is reported in a survey of FERIC's member companies. This report is intended to provide an overview of the current situation, and to assist present and future users by informing them about air-conditioning principles, maintenance requirements, choice of components, and the use of these components in actual applications. With judicious choice, installation and care, such systems can be successfully applied in the forest industry.

THIS REPORT EVALUATES THE ERGONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF COMMONLY-USED FELLER-BUNCHERS AS PART OF FERIC'S ERGONOMIC PROGRAM AIMED AT IMPROVING MACHINE PERFORMANCE AND INCREASING OPERATOR EFFICIENCY AND WELL-BEING IN FORESTRY MACHINES. THE ACCESS, CAB, AND CONTROL CHARACTERISTICS OF A SAMPLE OF 10 FELLER-BUNCHERS WERE COMPARED TO THE RECOMMENDED STANDARDS. NARROW AND OFTEN PARTLY OBSTRUCTED CAB DOORS, CRAMPED WORK SPACES, AND COMPLEX CONTROL OPERATING REQUIREMENTS WERE THE MAIN WEAKNESSES OF THIS MACHINE SAMPLE. THE LACK OF CONTROL STANDARDIZATION AMONG SIMILAR MACHINES IS A MAJOR CONCERN.

Les opérateurs de machinerie ont une grande influence sur la gestion efficace du carburant et la productivité. L’atelier enseigne aux participants comment choisir les meilleures machines pour le travail à faire, quand les remplacer et comment les utiliser de façon à réduire l’intensité énergétique des opérations, soit la quantité de carburant par unité de production. Le cours présente aussi le concept de suivi de la consommation de carburant et les facteurs qui agissent sur l’intensité énergétique. Cette formation est prévue pour une durée de 3 heures, y compris la période de questions. Au final, il est estimé que les participants peuvent atteindre jusqu’à 10% d’amélioration en productivité tout en économisant sur les coûts de carburant. Cet atelier est un élément essentiel pour tirer le meilleur de votre investissement dans la machinerie forestière.

Machine operators have a large impact on fuel efficiency and productivity. This course teaches participants how to choose the right machines for the job, when to replace them, and how to operate them to reduce an operation’s energy intensity, or fuel per unit of production. The course introduces the concept of tracking fuel use and the factors that drive energy intensity. The course takes 3 hours to complete, including time for questions and answers. Workshop participants can save on fuel costs and boost productivity by up to 10%. This workshop is an essential part of getting the most out of your investment in logging machines.
