Abstract
Since the cost of fuel is an important factor in the use of off-road equipment, it is to the advantage of every machine owner to make the most of this necessary expense. Certain work habits and operational factors influence fuel consumption. Recent trials conducted by FPInnovations researchers have explored some ways to improve fuel intensity and measure the savings.

Puisque le coût du carburant est un facteur important dans l’utilisation des équipements hors route, il est à l’avantage de tout propriétaire de machine de tirer le maximum de cette dépense nécessaire. Certaines habitudes de travail et facteurs opérationnels ont une influence sur la consommation de carburant. De récents essais menés par les chercheurs de FPInnovations ont permis d’explorer certaines pistes d’amélioration de l’intensité énergétique et de mesurer les économies.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the potential for downsizing skidder requirements on soft ground through the use of high-flotation tires. The test was designed to compare the relative performance of a 90-kw skidder with conventional tires and chains to that of a 67-kw skidder equipped with high-flotation tires. The comparison criteria were short-and long-term productivity, fuel consumption, ground disturbance and operating costs. The trial was performed in the Abitibi region of Quebec under contract to the Ministère de l'Énergie et des ressources du Québec.

Abstract
The Gaspé Peninsula presents several particularities that are manifested even at the level of the ground conditions after cutting. These are characterized by a large quantity of logging residue, high stumps, numerous residual trees high stumps, numerous residual trees, strong competition and competition and steep terrain making site preparation operations making site preparation operations difficult. A study conducted by FPInnovations in the summer of 2018 resulted in the development a decision grid, adapted to the conditions encountered in the conditions encountered in the Gaspé Peninsula, allowing the identification of the best preparation technique based on the best cost per microsite ratio.

La Gaspésie présente plusieurs particularités qui se manifestent même au niveau des conditions de terrain après coupe. Cellesci sont caractérisées par une grande quantité de résidus de coupe, des souches hautes, de nombreux arbres résiduels, une forte compétition et des terrains escarpés rendant les opérations de préparation de terrain diffi ciles. Une étude menée par FPInnovations à l’été 2018 a permis de développer une grille décisionnelle, adaptée aux conditions rencontrées en Gaspésie, permettant d’identifi er la meilleure technique de préparation de terrain en fonction du meilleur rapport coût par microsite.

Abstract
In an effort to improve the flotation and mobility of off-road vehicles on the low strength soils which underlie large portions of the forest area throughout Canada, FERIC initiated a search for a dependable high-flotation tire which could be used to improve the performance of existing logging machines. This report describes the four-year testing and development program, and the performance of skidders equipped with wide, high flotation tires on both soft and on steep terrain. The advantages and disadvantages of these tires are summarized.
