Abstract
This handbook describes the various types of equipment and systems used for harvesting timber in British Columbia. Falling, primary transport (ground, cable and aerial), processing, and loading phases are described in terms of common and distinguishing features and their relationship to operational and environmental considerations. The handbook also discusses the effects of operating techniques, site characteristics, and external requirements from the same operational and environmental perspectives. Primary operating conditions for the various machines types are outlined in summary tables. A series of flowcharts based on risk-analysis system is used to rank the probability of conducting successful operations with different equipment on various sites.

Abstract
This report investigates the feasibility of using spindle motor power or cutting force measurements to determine the sharpness of router tools during operation. Machining tests were conducted on FPInnovations’ Shoda 3-Axis CNC router using new and worn standard straight flute tools cutting melamine coated particleboard. Spindle motor power was recorded during the machining operation and after a series of machining passes, cutting force measurements were taken on a test sample mounted to a 3-axis dynamometer. Testing revealed that although machining power increases with tool wear, the change in power is not large and tool geometry had a larger effect on power requirements than the changes in tool sharpness. Analysis of cutting force measurements showed that forces normal to the machined face varied linearly with tool sharpness and were much more sensitive to changes in tool condition. Again tool geometry can greatly affect the machining force so implementation of force measurement tool condition monitoring would require differing “end of life” criteria for different tool geometries.

Abstract
Wood drying is an essential step in the manufacture of most wood products to minimize the development of defects such as warp and checking. Kiln-drying under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity is the most widely used method for removing moisture from wood and achieving a low, uniform moisture. Many topics relevant to lumber drying are discussed in this manual: wood structure and wood-moisture relationships, drying methods, kiln types and instrumentation, treatment of logs and lumber prior to drying, kiln schedules and drying defects. Graphic data tables dealing with wood properties and wood-moisture relationships at various temperature are provided for hardwoods and softwoods utilized in Eastern Canada.

Abstract
Le présent manuel se veut une ressource didactique et un instrument de travail pour ceux et celles qui participent activement au séchage de sciages du groupe Épinette-Pin-Sapin (EPS). Il couvre un vaste éventail de sujets, depuis les principes de base du séchage jusqu'à l'application de techniques de séchage propres à ce groupe d'essences. La portée du contenu et la profondeur de son traitement ont été déterminées à la lumière de ces objectifs. La diversité de la matière première au sein du groue EPS et ses incidences sur les décisions concernant le séchage ont fait l'objet d'une attention particulière. Les auteurs ont tenté de formuler des solutions englobant un vaste éventail de conditions touchant la ressource et les opérations de séchage. Les premiers chapitres du manuel traitent des connaissances préalables pour l'analyse des solutions éventuelles que le lecteur pourra retenir à la lumière de sa situation particulière. Des études menées dans nos laboratoires constituent une importante toile de fond pour l'information présentée dans ce manuel. Les rapports techniques énumérés à la section Suggestions de lecture contiennent les résultats détaillés d'essais effectués chez FPInnovations - Division Forintek sur le séchage des sciages d'EPS. Le séchage du bois d'oeuvre ne se limite pas aux seules actions qui se déroulent dans les séchoirs ou dans le parc de séchage à l'air. Un des objectifs du présent manuel est de démontrer que l'opérateur de séchoir doit tenir compte d'un grand nombre de facteurs lors du processus de séchage. Selon Joseph M. Juran, pionner dans le domaine de la gestion de la qualité, un processus est "... une série systématique d'action axées sur l'atteinte d'un but. La performance du processus et des variations excessives auront des effets directs sur les résultats financiers d'une entreprise". [traduction] Il ne s'agit pas d'éliminer toute variation, mais d'en comprendre la nature et l'origine afin de minimiser ses incidences sur les résultats de l'opération.
