Abstract
One of the latest technological advancements under development is the aerial intelligence-gathering platform. The platform combines geo-referenced images (infrared and colour) with real-time telemetry. Data can be transferred to a fire centre, an incident command post, and hand-held devices. In 2010, FPInnovations conducted an analysis for the British Columbia Wildfire Management Branch to identify the branch’s data collection needs and priorities that might be addressed by this latest technology. Abstract
FERIC a étudié trois systèmes de récolte produisant des bois tronçonnés afin d'établir les productivités et les coûts applicables aux peuplements de feuillus intolérants. Les systèmes sont caractérisés par l'endroit où a lieu le façonnage soit à l'abattage, à la souche ou en bordure de chemin. Le coût du système utilisant une façonneuse en bordure de chemin était le plus économique, mais les deux autres systèmes observés peuvent aussi convenir aux conditions de récolte très variables rencontrées dans les peuplements feuillus. Un chantier de façonnage à la souche dans des peuplements de feuillus tolérants a aussi été étudié et les résultats indiquent que cette opération est moins productive et plus coûteuse que celle pratiquée en feuillus intolérants. La faible productivité obtenue était cependant compensée par la valeur supérieure des billes de sciage et de déroulage produites.

FERIC evaluated an operation in which mill biosolids were spread in a harvested poplar plantation. The operation was efficient, with spreading costs of $5/wet tonne. Spreading is a beneficial use of biosolids, but must be compared with conventional disposal methods to assess the operation's economics.

FPInnovations Forestry group has developed a variety of computer-based systems or tools to aid forestry practitioners with decision making in harvest operations. These information systems, aptly called Decision Support Systems (DSS), allow the simulation of operational decisions using software applications. With these simulations, the outcomes of operational decisions can be promptly forecasted. DSSs thus allow users to compare the feasibility and economic value of different potential operational decisions.

Abstract
Bison are an important resource and cultural value at the Heart Lake Indian Reserve north of Lac La Biche, and quality grass pasture is important to the success of the herd. A spruce and aspen stand was harvested in 1995, and regenerated to aspen. The Heart Lake Indian Band decided to convert this area to buffalo pasture. A burn was prescribed to remove the regenerating aspen and harvesting debris piles, and to allow the area to re-colonize with grass. FPInnovations monitored the burn to correlate pre-burn fuel loading and fire weather data with actual fire behaviour. Researchers revisited the site 3 years later to assess the long-term effectiveness of the burn treatment in killing the aspen.

Abstract
Integrating biomass recovery operations into traditional forest harvesting activities is critical for successfully implementing a bioventure. A biomass recovery trial was conducted in the La Tuque area in Québec. The study was realized under the BELT project and supported by the Council of the Atikamekw Nation (CNA) and Neste, a global leader in renewable solutions. The trial aimed to measure how much biomass can be extracted by two different harvesting systems including four topping diameter scenarios. It also validated the BiOS model, an FPInnovations tool that predicts the volume and cost of biomass recovery.

L'intégration des opérations de récupération de la biomasse dans les activités traditionnelles d'exploitation forestière est essentielle pour la mise en œuvre réussie d'une bioventure. Un essai de récupération de biomasse a été mené dans la région de La Tuque au Québec. L'étude a été réalisée dans le cadre du projet BELT et soutenue par le Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw (CNA) et Neste, un leader mondial en solutions renouvelables. L'essai visait à mesurer la quantité de biomasse pouvant être extraite par deux systèmes de récolte différents incluant quatre scénarios de diamètre d'étêtage. Il a également permis de validé le modèle BiOS, un outil de FPInnovations qui prédit le volume et le coût de la récupération de la biomasse.

With the appropriate mainline attachment, chain chokers are a viable alternative to conventional wire rope chokers, particularly for small-scale operations. This report provides users of tractor-mounted winches and cable skidders with technical information on chain chokers. The report covers type of steels, chain specifications and grades, and how to inspect chains for wear elongation. The various components (e.g. sliding hooks, rings) used to assemble chain chokers are also discussed.
