Abstract
FERIC evaluated an operation in which mill biosolids were spread in a harvested poplar plantation. The operation was efficient, with spreading costs of $5/wet tonne. Spreading is a beneficial use of biosolids, but must be compared with conventional disposal methods to assess the operation's economics.

Abstract
Canada is part of a global effort to replace the use of fossil fuels, which are major emitters of greenhouse gases, with cleaner alternatives. The Canadian Wood Fibre Centre (CWFC) is pursuing research in this area by looking at forest biomass as a substitute for petroleum products. Its research focuses on forest biomass supply sources (quantity available, location, harvesting costs, environmental impacts) and also on the characterization of wood fibre in order to develop new products for various uses.

Le Canada s’inscrit dans le déploiement d’efforts à l’échelle mondiale en vue de remplacer l’utilisation de combustibles fossiles, grands émetteurs de gaz à effet de serre, par des alternatives moins polluantes. Le Centre canadien sur la fibre de bois (CCFB) poursuit des recherches en ce sens en s’intéressant à la biomasse forestière comme substitut aux produits pétroliers. Ses recherches portent sur les sources d’approvisionnement en biomasse forestière (la quantité disponible, la localisation, les coûts de récolte, les impacts environnementaux) et aussi sur la caractérisation de la fibre de bois afin de développer de nouveaux produits qui seront utilisés à diverses fins.

Between the years 1986 and 2000, the reforestation strategy of the of the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune and Parks allowed the planting of some 180 million seedlings annually. Many of these plantations are now at the age where they can be age where they are suitable for a first commercial thinning.

Canada's climate change plan calls for a 17% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 17% from 2005 to 2020. To achieve this different options are considered: 1) increasing energy efficiency; 2) converting fossil fuels to renewable energy; 3) the adoption of improved; 3) adoption of improved forestry and agricultural management plans and 4) tax incentives for GHG emitters. Under government control, emitters can either reduce their emissions below the permitted level or purchase carbon offsets from those carbon offsets from those who significantly that significantly reduce their emissions below the permitted level.
Abstract
Le plan canadien sur le changement climatique prévoit une réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES) de 17 % entre le niveau de 2005 et celui de 2020. Pour ce faire, différentes options sont envisagées: 1)l’augmentation de l’efficacité énergétique; 2) la conversion des énergies fossiles en énergies renouvelables; 3) l’adoption de plans de gestion forestier et agricole améliorés et 4) des incitatifs fiscaux pour les émetteurs de GES. Sous le contrôle de l’État, ces derniers peuvent soit réduire leurs émissions sous le niveau permis ou acheter des crédits de carbone compensatoires à ceux qui réduisent leurs émissions significativement sous le niveau permis.
