Abstract
FERIC a entrepris une étude comparative de cinq méthodes de préparation de terrain (décapage avec bouteur, décapage avec excavatrice, mise en andains, broyage en plein, broyage par bandes) dans le centre de l'Ontario. L'étude avait pour but de mesurer la productivité de l'équipement utilisé, d'évaluer les résultats au point de vue de qualité des microsites et de calculer les coûts de diverses opérations. Les résultats indiquent que chacun des traitements mis à l'essai peut se révéler efficace dans certaines conditions. Le choix d'un traitement idéal dans les conditions de l'étude devrait être facilité par les suivis biologiques qui seront effectués par l'Ontario Forest Research Institute (OFRI) au cours des prochaines années.

Abstract
FERIC undertook a comparison of five site-preparation methods (scalping with a bulldozer, scalping with an excavator, windrowing, mulching of the full site, and strip mulching) in central Ontario. The study was designed to measure equipment productivity, assess the results in terms of microsite quality, and calculate the costs of the various operations. The results suggested that each treatment within the study conditions should be facilitated by biological follow-ups that will be carried out by the Ontario Forest Research Institute over the next few years.

Abstract
From July to September 1997, FERIC performed short-term case studies of five different implements used to till compacted landings in the Cariboo Forest Region. The case studies were part of a larger study by Lignum Ltd. and the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Cariboo Forest Region to investigate techniques for rehabiliting compacted medium and fine-textured soils. The five implements studied were: an excavator-mounted six-toothed silvicultural rake; a rake and a high-speed mixing head mounted on skid-steer loader; a Tilth winged subsoiler towed by a crawler tractor; standard ripper teeth mounted on a crawler tractor; and a skidder-mounted powered disc trencher. This report reviews the treatments, productivities and costs of using the five implements.

Abstract
Cette étude examine l'efficacité opérationnelle et le type de travail obtenu de deux méthodes pour la préparation de terrain dans des coupes par trouées. Dans les terrains qui lui sont accessibles, un bouteur ou un débardeur muni d'un râteau peut effectuer un scalpage superficiel rapide. Bien qu'elle soit moins productive, l'excavatrice offre plus de flexibilité au plan de la diversité des microsites qu'elle peut créer et elle permet d'atteindre des endroits difficiles d'accès avec un bouteur ou un débardeur.

Abstract
In July 1995, FERIC participated in a joint British Columbia Ministry of Forests/Canadian Forest Service research project. The aim of this project was to investigate tilling options for reclaiming compacted surfaces of temporary roads and landings on fine-textured soils. FERIC observed two machines used to perform the tilling treatments: a crawler tractor equipped with Tilth winged subsoiler, and a hydraulic excavator equipped with a hydraulic thumb and a five-tined site-preparation rake. This report reviews the productivities, costs, and performances of the two machines.
