FERIC a évalué un débardeur à câble équipé d’un treuil à double tambour et d’une radiocommande dans des opérations de coupe partielle de feuillus. L’augmentation de productivité a atteint jusqu’à 32 % selon la technologie utilisée, et la baisse de perturbation du terrain jusqu’à 40%. L’occupation par les sentiers et les dommages aux arbres résiduels ont également diminué (de jusqu’à 53 % et 79 %, respectivement). Les opérateurs montaient dans la machine beaucoup moins souvent, d’où une amélioration de la sécurité. Les télécommandes sont rentables pour toutes les machines, mais les treuils à double tambour coûtent probablement trop cher pour être installés sur de vieilles machines.

FERIC assessed a cable skidder with a dual-drum winch and radio remote control in hardwood partial-cutting operations. Productivity increased by up to 32% depending on the technology used, and ground disturbance decreased by up to 40%. Trail occupancy and damage to residual trees also decreased (by up to 53% and 79%, respectively). Operators entered the machine significantly fewer times, thereby improving safety. Remote controls are cost-effective for any machine, but dual-drum winches are probably too costly to install on older machines.

With the appropriate mainline attachment, chain chokers are a viable alternative to conventional wire rope chokers, particularly for small-scale operations. This report provides users of tractor-mounted winches and cable skidders with technical information on chain chokers. The report covers type of steels, chain specifications and grades, and how to inspect chains for wear elongation. The various components (e.g. sliding hooks, rings) used to assemble chain chokers are also discussed.

Abstract
Traction-assist (also called winch-assist, or tethered-assist) technology for steep-slope harvesting and forest operations has increasingly been implemented worldwide over the past four to five years. Industry involvement and the need for relevant information in western Canada have dramatically expanded in the last year alone. FPInnovations attended the Western Region Council on Forest Engineering (WR.COFE) seminar in January 2016, where one of the technical sessions focused on steep-slope tethered-assist technology. More than 300 attendees received updates from an academic (Oregon State University), a manufacturer (Summit Attachment & Machinery), a contractor (Technical Forest Solutions), a regulator (Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and a cable logging specialist(Brian Tuor)

Le présent rapport fournit aux utilisateurs de treuils montés sur tracteur ainsi que de débardeurs à câble des renseignements techniques sur les colliers étrangleurs en chaîne. Le rapport couvre les types d'acier, les dimensions et les qualités de chaînes, et explique comment vérifier l'usure et l'allongement des chaînes. Il traite également des divers accessoires (crochets coulissants, anneaux) qui s'ajoutent aux chaînes pour constituer les colliers étrangleurs.

La productivité du débardeur à câble diminue dans les opérations de coupe partielle parce qu'il est difficile d'obtenir de pleines charges à cause de la dispersion des arbres abattus, et que la nécessité de réduire au minimum les dommages au site impose de sévères restrictions aux déplacements du débardeur. L'utilisation d'un treuil à double tambour commandé à distance ainsi que de câbles tracteurs en fibre synthétique peut atténuer le problème en permettant aux opérateurs d'atteindre plus facilement les arbres abattus et de former une pleine charge utilise sans déplacement additionnels du débardeur. Le présent rapport résume une étude sur l'utilisation d'un treuil à double tambour équipé d'un câble tracteur en fibre synthétique lors d'une opération de coupe partielle dans des peuplements de feuillus tolérants au centre-sud de l'Ontario.

Abstract
FERIC studied the use of a Falard RC008 remote control on a single-drum cable skidder to determine its potential for improving the ergonomics and productivity of extraction during a hardwood partial-cutting operation. Productivity increases of 15 and 26% were obtained at two locations, and the operator was sufficiently pleased with the improved ergonomics that he purchased the remote control at the end of the study period.
