Wood shakes and shingles are an attractive, biobased material for cladding and roofing applications. Some naturally durable species, such as western redcedar, yellow cedar, and eastern white cedar may be used without additional treatment. However, preservative treatment can further extend service life and enable the use of lower durability species. FPInnovations’ field tests have demonstrated that chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treatments can last 50-years. Alternative, copper-based preservatives can also greatly extend the service life of shakes and shingles.
