In 1995-96, FERIC undertook a case study of an established satellite log storage yard supporting the Daishowa-Marubeni International Ltd. pulp mill near Peace River, Alberta. The study looked at the total wood supply system for the pulp mill, and documented the incremental and total wood handling costs both without and with the use of the satellite log storage yard. The potential for additional log breakage due to extra handling in the satellite log storage yard was investigated, and other potential costs and benefits were identified. A computer spreadsheet was developed to facilitate the manipulation and analysis of data obtained from similar field studies.
