Forest companies and contractors in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec have developed a method of winter scarification with simultaneous seeding. The winter treatment is an alternative to summer treatments on sites where access is difficult. Excavators equipped with scarification rakes and custom-built seeders were used to prepare and seed the seedbeds during the winter, when the sites were accessible. The study demonstrated that by using this approach, the reforestation cost was lower than that of conventional scarification but the regeneration density resulting from the seeding was lower.
