This project which was initiated by FERIC describes how a grapple saw was mounted on a Morbark 22 chiparvestor equipped with a sliding boom. The objective was to remove all potential sawlogs from the full trees prior to chipping, thereby improving the profitability of the harvesting operation. It is intended that this method would be used in many areas in stands where the low number of sawlogs and veneer logs cannot justify the expense of an additional man in the crew. Production results, cost/benefit analysis and installation details are given.
