In a survey to establish the adequacy of sheathing materials and related construction practices, a trial search of the Ottawa area for incidences of racking failures during windy conditions showed that weather data and newspaper records were the most useful sources of this information. Further search of newspapers from two cities, St. John, N.B. and St. John's, Nfld., guided by weather data, identified two disastrous windstorms in these two cities within the past five years (1976-1981). Despite the widespread destruction they caused to properties, there was not a single case of failure reported by the media that could be attributed to racking. Predominant damage caused by wind speeds exceeding those designed for included roofs being blown off, sometimes even pulling walls off their bases. Roof system anchorage practice was found deficient in resisting uplift forces, resulting in the predominance of this type of failure. The survey was prematurely discontinued, since the sources of information proved too sparse and poorly recorded for any conclusive results to be established
