The findings of recent studies from both eastern and western Canada have shown that the drying behaviour of subalpine fir (A. lasiocarpa) and balsam fir (A. balsamea) is similar, which allows common solutions to be applied based on research conducted on one species of fir or the other. This article summarizes previous research findings and good practices that can be adopted in the short term to improve the drying of fir.

The purpose of this guide is to provide an introduction to the concept of encapsulated mass timber construction. This guide provides an overview of encapsulation techniques for mass timber construction, and other related fire protection measures, and summarizes some approved encapsulation materials and application methods and identifies additional requirements for safety during construction. This guide is intended to help architects, engineers and designers by reducing uncertainty and allowing for more confidence in design, as well as providing authorities having jurisdiction and inspectors with a reference for simple design review.

The objective of this work is to generate fire resistance data for NLT assemblies to address significant gaps in technical knowledge. This research will support designers and builders in the use of mass timber assemblies in larger and taller buildings, as well as provide scientific justification for Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to review and accept this construction method. The intent is to demonstrate that NLT construction can meet or exceed NBCC fire safety requirements for use in buildings of mass timber construction. The data could be used towards the inclusion of an NLT fire resistance calculation methodology into Annex B of CSA O86 – Engineering Design for Wood [4], which currently addresses only glue-laminated timber (GLT), structural composite lumber (SCL) and cross-laminated timber (CLT).

The objective of this project is to establish fundamental fire performance data for the design and specification of NLT assemblies; this project specially addresses determining FSRs for NLT. The goal of this project is to confirm that NLT, when used as a mass timber element, has a lower FSR than standard thickness SPF boards when tested individually and flatwise. The project also considers how the surface profiles, design details, and the direction of an assembly might influence flame spread. This includes the evaluation of typical architectural features, such as a ‘fluted’ profile. Having this technical information will support project approvals for the use of NLT elements in larger and taller wood buildings, as well as provide scientific justification for Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to review and accept this construction method. This research will provide the evidence for designers to demonstrate their design have met or exceeded fire safety requirements. Ultimately the intent is to expand the adoption of manufactured solid timber construction for larger and taller buildings, as well as for non-traditional wood markets (such as institutional or commercial buildings). Other aspects of this project (in separate reports) include evaluating fire resistance of NLT, and assessing how NLT charring rates might be affected by gaps between boards.

This guide was developed by FPInnovations and its partners to assist in the design and construction of durable and energy-efficient wood-frame buildings in Alberta. The Province adopted the National Energy Code for Buildings 2011, as of November 1, 2016, in order to comply with the energy-efficiency requirements for large buildings (Part 3). It is now also possible, with new building regulations, to build wood structures with a maximum of six storeys or 18 m height in Alberta. This guide aims to provide solutions for the building envelope (enclosure) of Part 3 wood buildings, particularly five- and six-storey wood-frame buildings, to meet the prescriptive thermal requirements of the new energy code. A range of wood-based exterior wall and roof assemblies are covered, based on light wood frame or mass timber, and various thermal insulation materials are discussed. Effective R-values are calculated based on typical thermal insulation values of commonly used materials. This document also covers key considerations for building envelope design to maintain long-term durability in Alberta’s varied climate.

Meridian Road is an access road at the PRF and leads to research, forest management, and recreational sites. A multi-cell culvert system at Young’s Creek recently failed (bottom left), and the crossing needed large-scale maintenance to allow the continued movement of logging trucks, vehicles, and research teams. The culvert failure negatively impacted water flow and habitat. To rectify these issues, a modern, single-lane engineered wood product (EWP) bridge, named Centennial Bridge (bottom right), was installed and built by Corington Engineering Inc., of Renfrew, Ontario. The experience at the PRF is of interest to sustainable forest licence (SFL) holders (and municipalities) looking to gain more knowledge about the construction and design of EWP access road bridges. The goal of this case study was to highlight the main construction and design details of Centennial Bridge and draw some comparisons to conventional steel-logging road bridges.

This product category rules (PCR) document is intended to provide guidelines for conducting life cycle assessments (LCAs) and preparing environmental product declarations (EPDs) for corrugated products (including but not limited to corrugated boxes) manufactured in North America (see section 5 for definition of product category). The users of this PCR will be manufacturers of North American corrugated products and other interested parties. This PCR has been developed under the general program instructions for the FPInnovations’ EPD Program issued March 2013. The PCR presents a structure that is intended to ensure a harmonious approach is taken to derive, verify and present EPDs for corrugated products produced in North America.

The present is a review of current glyphosate use in British Columbia forestry, peer-reviewed forest science on the impacts of glyphosate use on forests, and input from stakeholders. The use of glyphosate in relation to the multiple values pertinent to forest management in British Columbia was considered. This report focuses on the silvicultural application of glyphosate as a vegetation management tool in re-establishing forest stands post-harvest.
