The butternut tree is seriously threatened by an aggressive pathogen and has been protected since 2005 by the Canadian Species at Risk Act. Citizens have helped researchers from the Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada to locate the butternut in Quebec and to monitor its health, which is an essential collaboration to optimize ongoing research.
