The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released its final U.S. rule on electronic logging devices (ELDs) in December 2015. That rule will become mandatory for all carriers, including Canadian ones, operating in the United States as of December 18, 2017. Transport Canada had announced earlier in 2015 that it would mandate ELDs for all federal carriers operating extra-provincially. This Info Note will provide a brief description of the technology and a discussion of the implications for the forest industry.
