In 2004, FPInnovations purchased a terra torch to use as an ignition source for experimental burns (Figure 1). Since then, the system has also been used by Parks Canada and Alberta Sustainable Resourced Development to ignite several prescribed burns. The terra torch is mounted on a small trailer which can be pulled by an ATV. Gasoline is pre-mixed with Flash21 in a separate drum. The system pumps the mixture from the drum to a wand with an igniter on the end. This design creates several problems: the system is prone to failure because of clogged lines; clean-up of the drum and the line is difficult and time consuming; any unused mixture must be burned off or discarded, sometimes resulting in significant waste.
