The objective of this research is to improve the ability of industrial
technologists to identify wood to species under mill processing
conditions.
Specifically, the objective will be met in two way, 1-To develop rapid chemical color tests for the separation of
spruce-pine-fir (SPF) lumber capable of being automated under
mill processing conditions; and 2-To effectively transfer to the industry technologist information
on anatomical and chemical means of identifying Canadian softwood species, through the preparation of an illustrated publication designed to consolidate all available information on the subject.
