In 1988, FERIC monitored two precommercial thinning operations in British Columbia: one in a coastal western hemlock stand and the other in an interior lodgepole pine stand. Both operations included side-by-side comparisons of chain saws and clearing saw. FERIC established pretreatment plots to assess stand composition and density conducted productivity assessments, and evaluated port-treatment results.
